28 scenarios

The Images CD-ROM contains 28 scenarios with over 160 video clips designed to test and develop your observation and active listening skills...

Each scenario introduces you to a character or characters with whom you will have an 'encounter'.

You are given some background information and a context in which your encounter takes place...

As you watch each clip you are asked to pay close attention to what you see and what you hear...

In particular you are encouraged to consider body language, interpersonal behaviour, accent, tone of voice, speech pattern and the environment surrounding the scene you encounter...

watch the video

> pay careful attention to what you see and what you hear...

what did you see?

> check the questions you think are correct after each video clip

After every video clip you are tested on what you saw...

You are given six possible observations - you must decide which are true and which are false.

You can play the video as many times as you like - however, each replay brings down your score (or 'skill coefficient') given at the end of the encounter...

Now you are asked to consider what you heard...

You are invited to carefully consider not just what was said but what might be heard in a person's tone of voice, accent, manner of speaking and so forth.

Further, you are asked "What did you think about what you saw and heard?" Without stopping to think about this question, it is not possible to develop observation and listening skills very far.

what did you hear?

> record your thoughts on what you heard after each encounter

watch next video

> repeat the process - watch the next clip and again record what you saw and what you heard

As you go through the clips that make up each encounter it is important to consider "How does this person, their manner, their story and circumstances leave you feeling?"

How one feels about a person, their story and the way they present themselves may influence what one sees, hears and thinks about that person.

A summary is given at the end of each encounter, highlighting themes important for each character...

Finally, each scenario invites you to consider "What action would you take next or wish to discuss with a supervisor?" This final question reinforces the idea that in the so-called "helping industry" it is very rare for persons to work alone without involving others in decision-making before, or immediately after direct action is taken.

summary

> compare your notes with the summary for each character

score

> check and record your results for each encounter

A score is calculated on your correct and incorrect answers, and you are marked down each time you replay the scenes.

Here you can track your performance using the workbook and worksheets printed off the CD-ROM.

Revisit the scenarios time after time and see how much more you find out about the characters, their situations, and yourself each time you go back...
